2016 BURGUNDY OFFER

Every year I visit, taste and, if correct, take my allocation of the latest releases from these 3 growers, Domaine de la VOUGERAIE, Domaine de la POUSSE d’OR, and Domaine FONTAINE GAGNARD

The biggest problem for the 2016 vintage is not quality rather more the tiny quantities available. Following an unusually warm spring which meant the flowering was well in advance, a vicious frost hit the Cote d’Or causing up to 80% (and in some vineyards 100%) loss of flowering.

WHITES
The 2016 whites generally have a fresher, cleaner fruit style than the more full bodied richer 2015s. The very best wines will match the superb 2014 vintage and, given the higher levels of acidity, will reward for some years to come.

REDS
As with the whites, the reds have a higher level of acidity and freshness than the fuller, richer 2015s. Personally I enjoy my Pinot Noir with an elegance and complexity which I believe this vintage will give after 5+ years of cellaring. 2 great back to back vintages – 2015 rich, full and sweet fruit, the 2016 clean, fresh and elegant. Both vintages too young to drink now but both will give enormous pleasure as they mature.

CONCLUSION
A tiny vintage of great quality. A different style to the 2015 so consider having both in the cellar if you can. The 2015s will drink earlier (at village level from 2019) whilst the 2016s will need longer, 2022 onwards).
